The Peer Support Workers has a voice in the decisions made around the Milken Center. For the past couple of weeks the PSW’s teamed up with the summer interns at the Milken Center to make it more youth suitable for all. As a veteran of the Urban League and peer support program I believe with more youth involved, together we will change the center and environment for other youth.

The Los Angeles Multicultural Education Collaborative program offers extensive workshops on education, leadership, and advocacy. The workshops include college readiness programs, financial planning, the financial aid process, and scholarships. The program educates it students in ways to survive using the six Universal Survival Laws while providing Life, Freedom and Future Economic Opportunity. The workshops are very relaxed and you are also given time to express your thoughts and feelings with the famous rubber chicken to your peers. The programs allow you to learn, laugh, and enhance educational outcome.

Hello, my name is Precious Boone and I am representing the Los Angels Urban League Milken Center. I come to you today to speak about the importance of a Youth Council. There are two important advantages to a Youth Council. Number one, young peoples voices are heard and they are taken seriously because they are put in leadership positions. Number two young people have the advantage of drawing other young people near. Things become more comfortable and students become more eager to get involved.

I began working at the Los Angeles Urban league about two years go. I had the opportunity to take advantage of several of its programs. I stayed with the Urban League until I started my first year of college at UC Santa Barbara in 2007. Now I am an intern this summer at the Los Angeles Urban League. I have come at a convenient time because the Urban League is going through a massive 21st century transformation, both in the physical aspect as well as changing the spirit of the center when thinking about how we want the atmosphere to feel for young people. This summer I have gotten the opportunity to work with some students in the peer support program, also known as the PSW program. The Peer Support Program offers leadership advice and support to younger students in the center in order to keep them encouraged and excited about the Los Angeles Urban Leagues programs. We know what excites us, what motivates us what opportunities we want to take advantage of.
