Participants Jarrod Jones and Precious Boone went to the NBC studios in Burbank, CA to do an interview with the News Raw team about the Podcast Bootcamp, taught by Apple Distinguished Educator Daphne Bradford. Both participants were able to take a tour of the NBC studio and got a quick look at the “Tonight Show” set and the “Days of Our Lives” set. The interview covered what takes places in the podcast bootcamp and what programs the Los Angeles Urban League Milken Center offers. The trip was definitely a treat for both participants.
The Los Angeles Urban League Milken Center has a great representation for getting youth involved. At the center on 5414 Crenshaw blvd, the podcast workshop has motivated young adults to inspire each other to excel in technology. Under the leadership of Dr. Renee Smith-Maddox, participants are given a look into 21st century technology, with the care guidance of Ms. Daphne Bradford, Apple Distinguished Educator. So please come and join us.
The key to becoming a Peer Support Worker (also called PSW) is to promote LIFE, FREEDOM, and FUTURE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY at the Milken Center and in your community. The Peer Support Workers has a voice in the decisions made around the Milken Center. For the past couple of weeks the PSW’s teamed up with the summer interns at the Milken Center to make it more youth suitable for all. As a veteran of the Urban League and peer support program I believe with more youth involved, together we will change the center and environment for other youth.
The Los Angeles Urban league Milken Youth Center Information Technology internship is a program where you don’t have to know everything when you first start the job. This internship requires patience and fast comprehension skills. The internship does have good benefits. The job pays eight dollars an hour, that might not sound like anything to you but the knowledge and the responsibility is priceless.
This internship program also has a work readiness program that teaches how to get a job and keep a job. This is a one day a week program that teaches on the job responsibility. The work readiness program helps me to understand the pressures that will occur in the real world. We do role playing to come up with common pressures on the job. All the skills I have learned on this job have prepared me for the meaningful goals of employment and education.
I have participated in a program that the Los Angeles Urban League offers called the Los Angeles Multicultural Education Collaborative. LAMEC was created to assist the community, adults, and youth to attain maximum educational outcome.
The Los Angeles Multicultural Education Collaborative program offers extensive workshops on education, leadership, and advocacy. The workshops include college readiness programs, financial planning, the financial aid process, and scholarships. The program educates it students in ways to survive using the six Universal Survival Laws while providing Life, Freedom and Future Economic Opportunity. The workshops are very relaxed and you are also given time to express your thoughts and feelings with the famous rubber chicken to your peers. The programs allow you to learn, laugh, and enhance educational outcome.
Hello, my name is Precious Boone and I am representing the Los Angels Urban League Milken Center. I come to you today to speak about the importance of a Youth Council. There are two important advantages to a Youth Council. Number one, young peoples voices are heard and they are taken seriously because they are put in leadership positions. Number two young people have the advantage of drawing other young people near. Things become more comfortable and students become more eager to get involved.
I began working at the Los Angeles Urban league about two years go. I had the opportunity to take advantage of several of its programs. I stayed with the Urban League until I started my first year of college at UC Santa Barbara in 2007. Now I am an intern this summer at the Los Angeles Urban League. I have come at a convenient time because the Urban League is going through a massive 21st century transformation, both in the physical aspect as well as changing the spirit of the center when thinking about how we want the atmosphere to feel for young people. This summer I have gotten the opportunity to work with some students in the peer support program, also known as the PSW program. The Peer Support Program offers leadership advice and support to younger students in the center in order to keep them encouraged and excited about the Los Angeles Urban Leagues programs. We know what excites us, what motivates us what opportunities we want to take advantage of.
