MILKEN FAMILY LITERACY & YOUTH TRAINING CENTER  

MISSION
The primary goal of the LAUL Milken Family Literacy and Youth Training Center is to develop the potential of each individual youth and to enhance the skills of children, youth, and adults functioning below their optimum level of achievement in order to successfully transition into higher education, careers and becomes self- sufficient.

Target Population
The Milken Family Literacy and Youth Training Center provides a comprehensive system of services (including employment preparation services, GED preparation, tutoring, homework assistance) to 2,600 youth participants ages 14-21 and their families.  The adult participants are frequently referred by local adult schools in the surrounding area.  A major portion of these participants reside within the City of Los Angeles.

Literacy Program
The Urban League Family & Youth Center provides literacy in math,
reading, writing, listening, problem solving and transference of skills
to youth and their families.

The Center provides quality program activities to assist youth and their families in developing the skills to compete for and obtain or retain meaningful employment as well as higher educational attainment.

The curriculum includes activities which encompass workplace literacy, and one-on-one tutoring for those in need of such services. Classes are conducted on an open entry/open exit basis.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE
Elementary Tuesday & Thursday 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
Middle School Monday & Wednesday 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
Senior High Tuesday & Thursday 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.

Who Qualifies?

  • Elementary School children (3rd through 6th grade)
  • Middle School
  • Senior High School youth
  • High School drop-outs

All enrollees must read and compute at the third grade level; those reading below will be offered assessment, counseling, and referral.

WIA Eligibility Requirements

  • Selective Service Registration (Males 18 and older)
